Creative Workshops on the RANEPA Summer Campus

After a week of lectures, the participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus 2018 were offered 11 new skills to learn: creating an animated film, pyrography (woodburning), playing the Ozark harp, Chak-Chak cooking, tanning, string-art, ebru (paper marbling), sand drawing, bracelet weaving, pottery and historical dances.

Those students, who attended the workshop on how to create an animated film, created their own script, worked on backgrounds and characters, learned the Principles of Animation. The authors created their animated works using paper and plasticine.

Pyrography (woodburning) was extremely popular that evening. The participants were crafting original notebooks by connecting two wooden plates with rings and inserting paper. On the surface of the plates, they circled a picture with a red-hot needle tip, and then painted it with acrylic paints.

Playing the Ozark harp (Jew's harp) was not an easy skill, as it required a lot of concentration. The Ozark harp is a unique, intuitive musical instrument. When playing the Ozark harp, the instrument is pressed against the performer's teeth or lips, and mouth serves as a resonator. Changes in the mouth articulation and respiration enable to change the instrument’s timbre. Thus, an unusual music of a cosmic character is produced.

Another popular workshop was Chack-Chack cooking. This traditional Tatar dessert is prepared as follows: knead the dough, cut it in a special way, deep fry it and make the honey syrup. The participants learned a special secret recipe that they can now replicate quickly and easily at home. Each lucky participant walked away with a box of Chack-Chack after the workshop.

At the workshop on tanning, the RANEPA Summer Campus participants learned how to make a bracelet made of natural leather by weaving. These bracelets are made of pre-cut leather strips woven in a specific order. Such weaving type is widespread in Eastern countries. It is often found on the lap belts and harness.

Another creative workshop on bracelet weaving was arranged that evening: the students created a bracelet in a traditional Russian weaving technique with their own hands. For this purpose, a special machine called "Berdo" was used. In ancient times belts and ochelie were woven this way.

String-art is a technique of creating a picture with the help of nails and threads. An amazing combination of wood, metal and multi-colored threads gives an amazing result. Such handicraft item will become a perfect memory for this summer.

For the admirers of painting, the organizers prepared a workshop on creating pictures in the ebru technique. This art is also known as the “Turkish marbling”. First, the image is painted on water, and then it can be transferred on to paper, fabric, wood, glass and even ceramics.

Sand is an unusual art material. With its help, amazing pictures are created in the technique of sand painting. The result was static sand pictures, and someone even tried to create dynamic sand movies.

The participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus worked with a genuine potter's wheel: they mastered the basic techniques and pottery tools. Everyone could choose the desired shape, whether it was a pot, a vase or a bowl. Creating products on the potter’s wheel requires not only an aesthetic sense, but also physical effort.

One of the most dynamic workshops was historical dances. Those who wanted to participate in dancing had an opportunity to dive into the atmosphere of medieval balls: they learned dancing as a pair, basic steps and figures, and the history of dancing. Professional teachers helped the participants to learn the dancing skill in historical costumes.

The evening pleased everyone: every participant found an occupation to their liking and mastered new skills.
