Discussion of succession of generations in modern world at 2018 Gaidar Forum

On January 17, RANEPA hosted the expert discussion, Succession of Generations in the Modern World: Technology, Demography, Geopolitics, as part of the 2018 Gaidar Forum, moderated by Georgi Derluguian, RANEPA Professor and Professor of New York University Abu Dhabi.

There are signs of a change of generations in the modern world, Mr. Derluguian said. New generations are clearly distinguishable in innovative technological breakthrough, demography, economics, and military geopolitics.

Gilles Saint-Paul, Associate Chair, PSL Excellence Chair at Paris School of Economics, spoke about the change of generations under the influence of the technological breakthrough; he focused oncomputerization and robotization of society. The world keeps pace with the times, which means that these processes influence the life of entire society and each of the people separately. He especially pointed out the development of automation in manufacturing based on industrial robots; innovative technologies lead to breakthroughs in all spheres of society, transforming it into information society, and hence creating a new generation.

Ron Rogowski, Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, cited an example of the generational gap in the US demographics. “Than younger representatives of the American society are, the more they support globalization. The older and more experienced, the more they support the agreement on the free trade zone,” the expert explained.

The discussion also touched upon the problems of geopolitics in the modern world and their influence on the shaping of the new generation; the participants noted very low political activity among young people in the modern world.

All speakers agreed that the modern world relies on ruthless competition, and new generations will compete even stronger. In conclusion, Georgi Derluguian noted that it is too early to close the chapter on the succession of generations.

The organizers include the Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy (Gaidar Institute) and the Association of Innovative Regions of Russia (AIRR).
