Mr. Josep Bertran: Culture and Art Create Social Capital

Mr. Josep Bertran, Professor at RANEPA and Pompeu Fabra University, spoke to participants in RANEPA Summer Campus 2018, Entrepreneurship in Culture and Entertainment, on July 16.

In the training session, Mr. Bertran told about artistic and cultural tools one can leverage to create the social capital. “Do you think art can help you develop your managerial skills?" the lecturer asked the audience.

Art, whether you are engaged in it or simply contemplate it, develops thinking, imagination and creativity. It helps create new projects, find common language with representatives of other cultures, determine own uniqueness and identity. Artistic tools are hosting events, sports events, museum management, fashion, artistic shows, entertainment, etc.

“Social capital makes intra-society relations “smoother” and more efficient. It’s thanks to art that people trust in each other more, and it means that problems are resolved quicker and easier,” the expert believes. Social capital can be measured with both positive and negative criteria. The former are, for instance, the involvement of the community in politics, visiting museums. The latter are the crime rate, suicide rate, etc. The role of art is to help develop communicative skills, to understand other cultures better, and thus the trust emerges.

Then Josep Bertran gave the definition of identity, told about its types and how it is expressed. The professor advised some books on this subject: Liquid Identities by Bauman, Creates Conflicts by Krishnamurty, Create Violence by Amarty Sen, Identities that Kill by Amin Maalouf.

Josep Bertran is one of the most interesting and positive speakers at RANEPA Summer Campus. The professor’s artistry and charisma leave nobody indifferent.
