Presentation of the translation of the first landmark book of The Modern World-System by American sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein
Presentation of the translation of the first landmark book of The Modern World-System by American sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein took place on the 20th of October at RANEPA’s partner institution, the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences.
Publication by the Russian Fund to Facilitate Education and Science publishing house of the Russian translation of the first landmark book of The Modern World-System by American sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein was become a long-awaited event. Until recently, there had only been late works by Immanuel Wallerstein published in Russia which were mainly publist but in The Modern World-System the author presents a totally different image—that of a scrupulous academician, constructing a monumental picture of the creation and evolution of capitalism since the XVI century. Despite the fact that this first book is dedicated to the “long” XVI century, it also addresses the present, as the dominant question that the author is trying to answer relates to the causes and reasons for the unbalanced development in the modern world. From this perspective, a quite late publication of the book in Russia (in English it was published in 1974) does not diminish the urgency or relevance of the book.
The main event at the presentation of the book was an open lecture by one of Immanuel Wallerstein`s students, professor of New York Univesity Abu Dhabi (UAE) George Derlugyan entitled: To the World-System Biography of Immanuel Wallerstein. Attendees were able to purchase the book directly from the publishing house at the presentation.
