Argentine G20 sherpa strengthens links with organizations in Africa and North America

Argentine G20 sherpa Pedro Villagra Delgado embarked on an international tour to consolidate relationships with regional and global organizations.
As policy coordinator for the Argentine G20 presidency and presidential advisor and representative, the sherpa held meetings at the United Nations and in Canada, South Africa, and Ethiopia.
His tour, which ran from 5-17 February 2018, began with meetings with UN leaders and a presentation of the G20 agenda before the General Assembly. Here he outlined the efforts being made to address the important challenges in today’s constantly-changing global environment, and presented the G20’s three priorities for 2018: the future of work, infrastructure for development, and a sustainable food future. He also met with Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General; Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs; and with Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, with whom he discussed gender perspectives that are being applied to all areas of the G20 agenda during Argentina’s presidency.
In Ottawa, Canada, the sherpa held meetings with his Canadian counterpart Jonathan Fried, and Peter Boehm, sherpa to the G7, a forum that brings together the most industrialized countries in the world (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States).
In Pretoria, South Africa, Villagra Delgado participated in a roundtable on the G20’s development priorities in Africa. Also participating were the South African sherpa and the ambassadors of Rwanda (2018 chair of the African Union) and Senegal (2018 chair of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, NEPAD), as well as representatives of Think 20 and Business 20, two of the seven civil society engagement groups that participate in the G20 process. South African sherpa Anil Sooklal highlighted the Argentine presidency’s engagement with Africa’s challenges.
In the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Villagra Delgado held meetings with senior officials of the African Union, the regional organization that convenes all African states, as well as the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), NEPAD, and Ethiopian ministers. Here he discussed the G20’s relationship with the continent, exchanging ideas on the 2018 agenda and possible areas of overlap and collaboration.
At UNECA, he led a workshop on African priorities in relation to the G20 2018 agenda. Finally, at the African Union, Villagra Delgado met with Mourad Ben Dhiab, Secretary-General of the African Union Commission, and other leaders.
