The Conference will bring together about 50-60 representatives of academic community, think tanks, government structures and business communities of G20 and BRICS member countries.

Concept

The rise of new institutions in response to systemic vulnerabilities, strategic power shifts in the world economy and the slow pace of the existing institutions’ reform generated heated discussions over the proliferation of institutions and subsequent global governance fragmentation. At a time when global agenda requires consolidation of international cooperation, multilateral institutions face threats of rising nationalism, protectionism and geopolitical tensions.

These processes have direct implications for the G20 and BRICS agendas. Though essentially different in their missions and collective identities, G20 and BRICS have an important role to play in promoting inclusiveness, legitimacy and efficiency of global governance.

From an academic and practical perspective it is important to reflect on persistent and emerging global governance challenges, threats to multilateralism and G20 and BRICS responsibility, role and agendas for attaining the threefold objectives of generating inclusive growth, achieving Sustainable Development Goals and delivering on the Paris climate agreement commitments.

Objectives of the Conference:

The Conference objective is to present and discuss research findings and prognoses by leading experts from G20, BRICS and partner countries on the trends in global governance and multilateralism, the international institutions` role in the key policy areas and G20 and BRICS individual and collective capabilities to consolidate multilateralism and deliver on the key international commitments.

The Conference will focus on the following themes:

  • Global challenges and trends in global governance;
  • Multilateral solutions in key policy areas (macroeconomic policy, trade and investment, SDGs, climate change, financing for development, sustainable infrastructure, digitalization, labor and productivity);
  • G20 achievements, unfulfilled expectations, priorities for future cooperation and forthcoming presidencies;
  • BRICS achievements, unfulfilled expectations, priorities for future cooperation and forthcoming presidencies;
  • G20 and BRICS role in the system of international multilateral institutions;

The Conference outcomes will include publications in the journals indexed in Web of Science and Scopus databases.
