Early Start: from high-schoolers to sinologists
The Presidential Academy has hosted a meeting of RANEPA Lyceum students participating in the Early Start project and their parents with Dean of the IBS Department of International Relations Irina Timonina, as well as teachers, graduates and students of the department.
Yekaterina Kryukova, head of the Oriental Languages Division at the IBS Department of International Relations, spoke about the teaching of Chinese at the school, adding that graduates of the Chinese Class at the Lyceum will be able to continue learning that language in a specially established advanced group. This will significantly expand the scope of educational material for them, and by graduation, they will have reached a higher level of proficiency in Chinese.
The meeting was attended by graduates of the department who spoke about their career after graduation. Danil Bochkov, Best RANEPA Student in 2016 and a British Petroleum scholarship holder, told the high-schoolers about possible career development options, outlining four main areas: civil service, academic employment, business, and employment in China, and shared his experience of doing internship at the Ministry of Economic Development.
Two students spoke about the opportunities and self-realization options in science and education – 3rd year Aliya Safina, who often speaks at research conferences and collaborates with the Carnegie Moscow Center, and 4th year Darya Korobkova, who is already teaching Chinese in high school.
Ksenia Pokrovskaya, who chose a business career, shared her work experience at Russia’s largest petrochemical company Sibur; her account aroused a keen interest from the audience.
At the end of the meeting, Irina Timonina answered questions. At the request of the parents of the lyceum students, it was decided to hold another meeting in the near future to get more feedback and discuss further development of cooperation between IBS Department of International Relations and RANEPA Lyceum.
RANEPA Lyceum launched the Early Start project in September 2018, in cooperation with the IBS Faculty of International Relations, recruiting a group for in-depth study of the Chinese language.
