Effective leadership is based in the brain and manifests itself through stress (VIDEO)

Expert Discussion “How to liberate the brain to achieve effective leadership?” was held on the final day of the 10th Gaidar Forum. The discussion was moderated by Dzhangir Dzhangirov, Senior Vice President of Sberbank, Head of Risks Block.

The modern world poses a huge number of challenges to people, both personal and corporate. According to scientists, the person of the future should meet the information challenges of the 21st century. The experts discussed how to change the speed of the human brain operation and how to make it work for leadership.

Dr. Steven Poelmans, Professor of Neuroscience and Strategic Leadership at Antwerp Management School, suggested the idea of how to identify real leaders: you need to put people in a stressful situation and see how they behave and how they adapt to it. The expert also highlighted some important features of the leaders. Thus, the leader should not only be able to speak, but also to listen. In addition, the leader must always set a goal and set guidelines for others. In this regard, there may be some paradoxes associated with the role of the leader in a company. One of these paradoxes is that the leader must both control the work process and be able to entrust other people with his powers. Another paradox of leadership is the simultaneous monitoring and satisfying the interests of the firm and the interests of the people working in it.

Tatiana Chernigovskaya Professor in the field of neuroscience and psycholinguistics, told about the man of the future and his place in the world of digital technologies and rapidly changing reality. The leader, according to Mrs. Chernigovskaya, should be “crazy”, that is, different from the robot, which, by its nature, can not be nervous or show any emotions. The leader is someone who ignores advice, risk themselves and the company, breaks stereotypes.

The expert asked herself what is the brain. She stressed that any brain, of a genius or a stupid person, is more complex than anything in the world. Nevertheless, the genius brain is not the one that can perform mechanical work, quickly count or switch, because all this can be done by artificial intelligence. But artificial intelligence, according to Tatiana Chernigovskaya, will never replace a person, so from an early age we must learn to adapt to life in the digital world to preserve humanity.

Alexander Asmolov, Doctor of Psychology, Director for Humanitarian Policy at RANEPA, proved, on the example of a banknote, that human behavior is not reduced to the schemes and formulas described in psychology: no scientist will be able to understand with the help of experiments where the purchasing power of money comes from. In the same way, when studying the brain, it is impossible to understand where the mind comes from or how the personality is formed.

Turning to the question about the key characteristics of the leader, the speaker noted that the leader is a master of “predicative effect”, that is, the one who can determine the zone of the nearest development of his employees. Mr. Asmolov also shared a study on who is the leader in Google – those who were reading science fiction books in adolescence.

At the end of the session, all speakers agreed that the leader is not just a robot that can quickly count or perform work correctly. The leader is someone who knows how to love, laugh, take risks, show emotions and be curious.
