Everyone needs to learn – both students and teachers

On January 16, the 10th Gaidar Forum 2019 hosted an expert discussion “The Three L Concept of Learning or the Lifelong Learning”. It was moderated by Timothy Mescon, Senior Vice-President of AACSB International for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Timothy Mesсon noted that lifelong learning is essential for everyone. The formation of conditions for the development of continuing professional education is one of the important prerequisites for the education system modernization. According to the expert, people who stand at the origins of business education should keep perfecting themselves in order to speak the same language with the new generation.

Speaking about lifelong learning, Steve Harvey, dean of the Business School of the American University of Beirut, focused the participants’ attention on modifications in the field of education. The world keeps the pace up with the times; to achieve the result, you must move on. The speaker specifically stressed that the professions of today will cease to exist over time. Technology will release the enormous mass of working-age population, which will have to be engaged in some different activities, and this will require new knowledge. Training of these people implies a major change and development of new educational programs.

Mikhail Andronov, President of RUSENERGOSBYT LLC, presented continuing education using training of mature people as the example. “The older people get, the less time they want to spend on self-education. Only 5–6% of the Russians are ready to improve themselves every day,” the expert commented. In addition, the speaker believes that this process is a must to speak the same language with the new generation, since every day everything changes at an incredible speed. The speaker noted that nowadays young people are prone to risk, to make mistakes, because this is how they gain invaluable experience, which further reduces the number of failures in their way. However, to educate middle-aged people, we have to explain that the risk now is a necessary part for their further progress. The speaker also shared an interesting fact: to become a true expert in a particular issue, you have to spend 10,000 hours, which means that in 42 years one can master about seven professions. Mikhail Andronov ended his speech with a quotation from 85-year-old Michelangelo: "I am still learning."

During the discussion, Andrey Sharonov, Rector, the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, paid attention to the technologies of the Lifelong Learning program. He noted that all the education criteria will rapidly lose their value, since the employer will have more reliable ways to check your level of competence. Thus, it is not necessary to strive for a high-status education. According to the speaker, an important factor in this educational system is interest in future knowledge.

All speakers agreed that such an education system is a useful thing. Concluding the discussion, Andrei Sharonov reminded that everything should be in moderation, because some people eagerly grab any new information for them, thus they are afraid to start doing something new.
