Gaidar Forum to convene leading Russian and international economists and politicians at RANEPA
From January 12 to 14, 2017, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) will host the Gaidar Forum, a standing discussion platform and a meeting point for key players on the global economic and political arena. This year’s forum is entitled Russia and the World: Setting Priorities.
The expert pool of the Gaidar Forum includes well-known politicians from Russia and other countries. According to Forum Director Ivan Fedotov, this year’s level of foreign guests of the Gaidar Forum will be even higher, as five current and former prime ministers and two presidents have confirmed their participation. According to Dr. Fedotov, the forum involves experts of the highest level who are profoundly aware of the global macroeconomic and political trends.
The political leaders planning to participate include Tarja Halonen, Giuliano Amato, Kevin Rudd and others.
Italian politician Giuliano Amato has led his country's government twice, in 1992-1993 and 2000-2001. The reform he conducted was aimed at making the Italian economy more competitive and improving social security. He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the G8 meeting in Genoa in 2001, where the two leaders discovered the similarity of views on many aspects of European politics. Amato has always been known to support Russia and urge the West to restore friendly relations with our country. After his party’s defeat in 2001, Amato joined the Convention that drafted the European Constitution. Today he is a member of the Constitutional Court of Italy and the European Public Law Organization.
Kevin Rudd, a well-known politician in his country and beyond, has led the Australian government twice, from 2007-2010 and in 2013. He was repeatedly elected to lead the Labor Party where he formed an alternative government, along with the current Cabinet. His main focus as the opposition leader was on Australia needing an education revolution. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia. Today, Kevin Rudd is President of the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York. He has repeatedly stated in interviews for various media outlets that to respond to global economic challenges, countries such as Russia, China and the US should work to establish stable, effective relationships.
Another interesting politician who will take part in the Gaidar Forum 2017 is Tarja Halonen, the first woman elected president of Finland. Ms. Halonen has held this post from 2000 to 2012, after heading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for five years. At present, she works for the UN, co-chairing the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development.
