Impact of business on solving global problems (MOVIE)
Six speakers hold a class for participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus simultaneously. Daria Goncharova, Vera Dadasheva, Elena Korotkova, Olga Luchina, Maxim Kochetkov and Inga Trofimova – they represent different companies, but they are knit together by the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
During the lecture, the speakers shared their experiences and told about their companies. Students discussed the UN Sustainable Development Goals, how they originated and why their companies are actively engaged in them. Three years ago, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It covers 17 goals that require uniting all factors of sustainable development: environmental protection, social integration and economic growth to achieve them.
Business plays an important role in achieving these goals. At the meeting, the participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus learned from the speakers what actions they take to implement these tasks.
Maxim Kochetkov, the Adviser of the member of the Board, First Deputy General Director, PJSC RusHydro spoke. He said that in 2017, his company joined the largest business initiative in the area of sustainable development, because it shares the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.
Vera Dadasheva, co-founder of Singularity University in Russia, a leading training and development specialist, Deloitte CIS, shared her opinion. The audience learned about Singularity University, one of the few projects to determine the image of the global future. The speaker introduced participant of the RANEPA Summer Campus to peculiarities of this project.
Elena Korotkova, the Head of ESG, Severstal, revealed objectives of the company and strategy for their implementation. By 2030, Severstal plans to increase employment in small and medium-sized businesses up to 38% of the population of the region. In the regions of its operations, the company is seeking to introduce sustainable quadripartite cooperation according to the Power-Society-Business-Media principle.
Olga Luchina, Internal Communications Manager, Philip Morris Sales and Marketing; Daria Goncharova, Chief Sustainability Officer, Polymetal; and Inga Trofimova, who is in charge for corporate responsibility and sustainable development in the Russian Office of Deloitte, delivered their speeches to participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus.
This was followed by discussion, in which students of the RANEPA Summer Campus were actively involved. They discussed the strategic development goals and their application, and asked the speakers many questions.
The sustainable development was very interesting for participants: if students have a project idea, they are ready to support and develop it. ‘I know a lot about the 17 goals, this is very interesting: even distribution of resources is critical here, one will not work without the other, because everything is interconnected. Still this is a great opportunity to realize your potential and implement your idea. One of my friends did so: she had a project to create an incubator, very useful, with a long-term perspective, and she was supported and stimulated,’ told Niklas Beiderwieden, a German participant.
At the end of the event, practical work was arranged for students to answer questions on the subject of the lecture and to solve problems. A specific problem was offered for the participants to find a way out, using their knowledge and experience.
