Leadership Agility from Ron Meyer
On October 5, the Presidential Academy hosted the presentation of the Russian edition of Leadership Agility: Developing Your Repertoire of Leadership Styles, a book by Managing Director of the Center for Strategy & Leadership Ron Meyer.
The guest was introduced by RANEPA Vice-Rector, Director of the Institute of Business Studies (IBS) Sergei Myasoyedov and Academic Director of the EMBA program at Antwerp Management School, Deputy Director RANEPA IBS Mikhail Zaytsev.
Dr. Myasoyedov pointed out that while reading Meyer’s book, he realized it was a few steps ahead of the emotional intelligence theory many universities are currently introducing. “I think it is a great book and will help readers look at leadership in a new way. I’m sure that everyone who reads it will be able to learn something that will allow them to develop their leadership skills,” he added.
Ron Meyer led a leadership workshop for the presentation participants. The speaker explained that to be a leader, it is not enough to want to lead people. It is people that must accept them as a leader. The main difference between a leader and a manager is that managers can be appointed by management, while leaders must be accepted by other people. Leadership is based on relationships, not on official status, he stressed.
One of the main thoughts that Ron Meyer conveyed to the audience is that one needs to be flexible and be able to switch and adapt to be able to interact with different people. A leader always needs to learn something new, and always be able to adapt not only to different people, but also to different situations.
“We need to figure out our own style and understand what alternative leadership styles exist,” the speaker explained. This is what Leadership Agility: Developing Your Repertoire of Leadership Styles is about. Ten chapters in the book are devoted to specific types of leadership and their opposites.
Ron Meyer is a Strategic Leadership professor at Europe's leading business schools and Managing Director of the Center for Strategy & Leadership.
