Leadership Technology is the Secret to Success
At the beginning of the discussion session, moderator of the discussion, Veniamin Kaganov, Assistant Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, touched upon the subject of a leader in certain situations where creativity is the key to the team efficiency. He gave an example of various art projects, the creation of new films, as well as various tourism projects.
In his online message, Andrei Nikitin, former head of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives for new projects promotion and acting governor of the Novgorod Region, expressed his opinion on the use of leadership tools for the development of the state’s territories. According to Andrei Nikitin, the most active people in small and not very developed regions fail to find work for themselves where they were born and leave for major cities, Moscow or St. Petersburg, where they find the way to accomplishment. “The more active people leave, the less chance the region has to develop,to be able to catch up or even overtake other regions of the Russian Federation,” the governor of the Novgorod Region asserts. He drew the audience’s attention to the fact that the question of leadership also lies in finding a “place for achievement” on the territory of the region, which gives the leader a chance to develop in the desired direction. In addition, Andrei Nikitin mentioned the “Leader of Russia” competition, which helps to identify a person with the best qualities of a “leader”. The governor is confident that local leadership contests greatly refresh the existence of small areas and give them the development momentum.
Alfa-Bank Chief Executive Officer Vladimir Verkhoshinsky spoke on the topic of leadership technologies in the technology business. “In today's world, leader’s qualities are the main competitive advantage, secrets to and factors of success,” the speaker is convinced. In addition, based on data from BCG (Boston Consulting Group), Vladimir Verkhoshinsky said that over 30 years the complexity of business management has increased 5-6 times. This means that nowadays it is much more difficult for executive leaders to lead their companies to success. The bank CEO believes that this problem is primarily related to the digital technologies development. In the opinion of Vladimir Verkhoshinsky, the paradox is that the improvement of technology both increases labor efficiency and complicates the internal process of the company work organization. “Despite the crisis, many banks cannot integrate into the modern, changed business environment, that is why their number steadily decreases now,” says Alfa Bank’s Chief Executive Officer. Moreover, Vladimir Verkhoshinsky believes that at present, the success of all banks and various organizations depends on the transition from the model of the leading managers’ isolated work to the model of their cross-interaction.
During the expert discussion, Edward Galazhinsky, Rector of the Tomsk State University, spoke about leadership in the education system. In his opinion, at the moment the educational system only starts thinking about the leadership development. “The issue of educational institutions leadership lies in aspects related to the essence, values, and goal-setting,” says the rector of the TSU. One of the main factors of leadership, according to Eduard Galazhinsky, is communication with people. In addition, the university leadership qualities are based on discussion of values, the understanding of further development, and the awareness of responsibility. During the discussion, the rector of Tomsk State University shared the conclusions of his research. He identified three main principles: management of self-development (a focus on “self”), 3 modes of change (run, change, disrupt), and a focus on the ecosystem.
Pavel Popov, First Deputy Director General of the United Rocket and Space Corporation, emphasized that the main task that all corporations now face is to develop leaders out of those people, who have long been working in these associations. Due to the program for managers delivered in 2017, the URSC has identified 3 key areas and begun developing them to form a common ideology and employees comprehension of what they are doing. “The first aspect is internal entrepreneurship,” the speaker said. According to the first deputy general director, entrepreneurship is the ability of employees to solve prominent problems in a corporation. The second thing that Pavel Popov singled out is the ability to turn data into information and use this information to solve any business problems. And the last one is the skill of goals (ideas) formulating. The top manager is confident that every employee in the team, in addition to the leader-manager, should have all these 3 qualities. “There is no leadership without a team,” says Pavel Popov.
The topic of convergent leadership was touched by Doctor of Economic Sciences Dmitry Edelev. In his opinion, a person, who is able to go out of the psycho-emotional zone into a new updated environment, is also able to possess a new power of self-stimulation. “At the moment, development of convergent leadership, which is not present, unfortunately, in Russia so far, is the task that will help to identify new efficient creative leaders for the future of our country”, says Dmitry Edelev.
Olga Golyshenkova, President of the Association of Citizens and Organizations for the Promotion of the Corporate Education Development “MAKO”, joined the remarks of the doctor of economic sciences. She believes: “Convergent leadership is about cooperation and shared leadership: when there is more than one“ leader” that is responsible for everything, and everyone else does not just accept what the leader says but cooperate in creative work of the whole team.”
Summing up the expert discussion, Veniamin Kaganov proposed in the future to create a program of convergent leadership that would be useful to anyone who wants to make a “collective leader” out of their teams in their territories / organizations.
