Leonid Smekhov on manipulation and persuasion
On July 11 Leonid Smekhov, Professor of business rhetoric of MBA, EMBA programs, Institute of Business Studies of RANEPA, taught RANEPA Summer Campus participants how to distinguish between strategies of persuasion and manipulation during a discussion.
The expert said that during a discussion or a friendly conversation people often use manipulation techniques. Increasing the speed of conversation, appealing to emotions and values, using sophisms to convince a person you are talking to of your rightness – all these are manipulation techniques one can use even subconsciously. According to Leonid Smekhov, manipulation in communication is normal, but one should be able to tell competent argumentation from sophisms. Sophisms represent a special technique of intellectual fraud, an attempt to pass lie off as the truth and thus to mislead others.
The organizers of the Summer Campus of the Presidential Academy are the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Association of Innovative Regions of Russia, with the support of the Group of Companies ACIG.
