Professor John Zysman talks digital revolution at RANEPA
On January 11, John Zysman, Professor of University of California-Berkeley and Founding Director of Berkeley Roundtable on International Economics (BRIE), spoke at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA). In his lecture, devoted to the last phase of the digital revolution, the expert reviewed the phases of digital transformation, covered several important aspects of technology platforms, intensive digital automation and transformation of services.
Speaking about the economy of technology platforms, he explained his understanding of what drives a national market system – internal dynamics and external competition.
To explain his point, he used an example from the history of US-Japanese competition, the so-called early challenge to American leadership – the US-Japan trade conflicts over semiconductors and consumer electronics, exports from the closed Japanese market to semi-open Western markets, sustainable manufacturing as part of industrial revolution and international production networks and outsourcing as the response of the West.
