RANEPA and Steinbeis University Berlin (Steinbeis-Hochschule Berlin (SHB)) opened Master’s degree course in digitization

The Institute of Management and Regional Development (IURR), RANEPA together with the School of International Business and Entrepreneurship (SIBE) at Steinbeis University Berlin (Steinbeis-Hochschule Berlin (SHB)) (Germany) opened an international dual-diploma Master’s degree program in Management of Production and Infrastructure Systems in Digital Economy.

Aleksandr Senin, Dean, the Faculty of Marketing and International Cooperation, IURR, RANEPA and Ardin Jalali, Director of International Programs and MBA, SIBE, told about the advantages and effectiveness of the program.

- Why did such program emerge?

Aleksandr Senin:

- Today, the digitization is gaining momentum in many fields, the digital economy subject is especially urgent. It is often reflected in state programs and Decrees of the President of the Russian Federation, and now, there is great interest and demand for training the new generation of managers in digital economy. This gave rise to the idea to create program Management of Production and Infrastructure Systems in Digital Economy.

- What is interesting about the program?

Aleksandr Senin:

- In addition to the urgent education profile, the program was developed jointly with the School of International Business and Entrepreneurship (SIBE) at Steinbeis University Berlin (Steinbeis-Hochschule Berlin (SHB)). This school is successfully implementing Master’s degree programs aimed at dual (i.e. practically oriented) education, when a student does not only get theoretical knowledge, but also puts it into practice.

Ardin Jalali:

- This approach is very good exactly for the Master’s degree course, i.e. the second stage of education, when students have already got some theoretical base. In Germany, this Master’s degree program is accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) and has the highest quality seal.

- How shall this dual education be practically implemented?

Ardin Jalali:

- The educational process is designed so that students first select real existing projects for themselves: these shall be either projects of the companies where they are already working or projects suggested to them by German specialists. Then, based on theoretical knowledge, participants of the program shall develop these projects under supervision of German and Russian specialists, and then practically implement them in their companies.

- You mentioned that students may take projects of the companies they are working for. That is, students can both work and study for a Master’s degree?

Aleksandr Senin:

- Yes, the program was developed so that students can both study and work. It is planned that, during the first year, students will study two evenings on weekdays and on Saturdays, and, during the second year, Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.

- What are the advantages of this program Management of Production and Infrastructure Systems in Digital Economy?

Aleksandr Senin:

- The major advantage for students is dual diploma. A student in enrolled both at the Academy and at the German School simultaneously, studies and, following successful completion of the single program, gets two diplomas at a time from two leading higher education institutions, the Russian and the German. Certainly, this will make students even more competitive in the job market.

Ardin Jalali:

- In addition, students will get international experience, contact with German colleagues, as the program is based on interactivity and interaction of students with each other and with teachers. This interaction is a mandatory part of the educational process for students to accumulate contacts necessary for career advancement in doing so.

- Are there any peculiarities of this Master’s degree course?

Ardin Jalali:

- Yes, one of peculiarities of the program are online elements in the educational process. Students will get access to the special platform E-Campus, where models to be mastered shall be placed. E-Campus provides the maximum valuable insight into contents of each module, goals and objectives to be reached, on exams and assessment criteria. Thus, students know exactly when and which tasks they shall perform.

- What shall be the language of the training?

Aleksandr Senin:

- The program is bilingual. In the first year, the training shall be held in Russian and, in the second, in English.

- What admission tests should be passed by those who decided for training under the new program?

Aleksandr Senin:

- First, students shall pass RANEPA admission tests, they shall begin on August 16. An exam in test form and an interview in the English language are planned. After passing the tests, the student enters the Academy.

Ardin Jalali:

- To get enrolled at our School, students will have to pass an online interview in September and tests for competences and the English language. If a student already has a certificate of international exam TOEFL or IELTS, he/she will not have to pass tests in the English language both at RANEPA and at our School.

Aleksandr Senin:

- To be able to study under the program and to master the material, the student must have at least CEFR level B1. In the first year of studies, the program provides for an intensive Business English course to enable students to improve their level.

- You have mentioned a test for competences. What is it?

Ardin Jalali:

- Our School (SIBE) at Steinbeis University Berlin (Steinbeis-Hochschule Berlin (SHB)) uses its own methods to assess competences and offers students to pass this test. I would like to emphasize that it has no correct or wrong answers. The test is required to analyze how the student approaches the problem solution and what his/her individual potential is. During studies, we shall also systematically and consecutively assess competences of students to track their dynamics.

- How effective is this program?

Aleksandr Senin:

- This program is new at RANEPA. But it has already proved itself in Germany, USA, Brazil, China and UK as an effective step for successful career in management.

Ardin Jalali:

- According to surveys regularly held by the School, in three years after completion of the training, 71% graduates are enticed by larger companies, 57% graduates hold managerial positions and 10% of graduates set up their own businesses. The graduates themselves assess the educational program as good or very good and confirm that it had substantial impact on their professional development.
