Sam Potolicchio shares tips on successful public speaking (VIDEO)
RANEPA Professor Sam Potolicchio, founder and President of the Preparing Global Leaders Foundation, has delivered an interactive lecture at the International Summer Campus. He shared the secrets of making successful and memorable presentations, and gave the students some tips on how to influence the audience.
Professor Potolicchio grabbed his audience’s attention from the first minutes. He began his presentation with the question: “What is charisma for you?” There was a variety of answers. According to the expert himself, charisma combines two things that would seem mutually exclusive at first glance – toughness and softness. Just like leadership skills, charisma can be developed, Sam Potolicchio believes.
The most difficult thing in public speaking, according to the expert, is to win over the audience. Body language can be of great help here, since it is sometimes more convincing than words. Furthermore, it is important to establish eye contact. When a speaker pushes emotional buttons in their audience, they automatically win its trust and acceptance. However, one should not forget that the speaker must be competent in their subject and familiar with reliable facts.
Sam Potolicchio advised the participants to use stories from personal life and humor in public speaking to become closer to the audience and win their favor. For a clearer understanding, he showed the students two interviews from American evening talk shows, with actors Tom Hanks and John Krasinski. Sam Potolicchio applied his own methods during his lecture. The speaker did not stand on the stage, but walked around the room to be closer to the audience. He joked a lot, shared stories from his life and kept in touch with the audience.
