Summer Campus participants discover the beauty of Kazan
On July 16, the participants of the International Summer Campus of the Presidential Academy went on a tour of Kazan, where they learned a lot about Tatarstan’s over-1000-year history, culture and economy.
The students’ morning began with a visit to the city’s main landmark, the Kazan Kremlin – the city’s historic citadel. The guide told them about the history of the Kremlin and its most famous buildings – the Spasskaya Tower, the Syuyumbike Tower, the Presidential Palace and the Kul-Sharif Mosque. They took pictures against the stunning backdrop of the city opening up from the observation platform.
The participants attended the traditional Tatar annual holiday celebrated at the end of spring fieldwork, Sabantuy, and took part in traditional amusements – searching for a coin in kefir, running with an egg on a spoon held in one’s teeth and breaking pots blindfolded. They also learned how to dance traditional Tatar dances and took their pictures in traditional dress.
Their next destination was the City Panorama museum, where the students learned about the history and legends of Kazan, as well as some interesting details about the city emblem. They examined in detail the city of Kazan and surrounding areas on three large dynamic dioramas: the 11th century Kazan, the times of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, and modern Kazan.
Their final visit was to the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, where the participants were told about the economic potential and development of the region, its key industries and its current significance for Russia.
