On July 18, the participants of RANEPA Summer Campus had a chance to learn 13 skills: cartoon-making, pyrogravure, playing the drum, making chak-chak, tanning, string-art, paper marbling, sand painting, pottery, historical dances, watercolor-painting, gingerbread painting and 3D modeling.

One of the most popular activities that evening was trying out a real potter's wheel – the students tried all the basic techniques and tools. Everyone could choose a shape and create their own unique design. Wood-burning a tree was another exercise that fascinated everyone. The participants made sketchbooks: first, they used a pyrography pen to make a design on a wooden plank and painted it with watercolors; then they connected the two planks with metal rings, creating their own exclusive sketchbooks.

At the leatherwork workshop, the participants learned how to weave bracelets from genuine leather. A bracelet is made of pre-cut strips of leather woven in a special pattern. This type of weaving is widespread in the East and is often found on waist belts and horse harnesses. During the evening, the students could also try the culinary arts, making the traditional Tatar dessert, Chak-chak, and painting gingerbread with individual patterns.

Another unusual craft the students tried was string art (thread graphics) – a technique for creating a pattern with nails and threads. An amazing combination of wood, metal and colorful threads produces an unusual and fascinating result. The participants will keep these pieces as mementos of the Summer Campus. At the cartoon-making workshop, the students developed scripts, worked through the backgrounds and characters, and studied the basic rules of animation. They created their own animated films using paper and plasticine.

The participants also enjoyed 3D modeling. Everyone kept a souvenir hand-made using a 3D pen. Those who enjoy painting could also try watercolor or paper marbling – a technique where color is floated on water and then transferred to an absorbent surface such as paper or another solid foundation. The students also created amazing sand pictures reflecting their own feelings and sensations.
