Summer Campus participants visit Sviyazhsk island
On July 18, the participants of the RANEPA Summer Campus went on the last part of their cultural tour program – to the unique landmark of culture and architecture, the island of Sviyazhsk.
Sviyazhsk is located 30 km from Kazan, at the confluence of the Volga, the Sviyaga and the Shchuka rivers. Sviyazhsk was founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1551 as a powerful fortress; the logs for construction were rafted down the Volga from Uglich. There are numerous surviving sites of ancient Russian architecture, Orthodox culture and history there, and in 2017, the Assumption Cathedral of Sviyazhsk was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The town-island of Sviyazhsk is a landmark of Russian antiquity with a rich history, and one of the most popular tourist sites in Tatarstan. During the tour, the students learned a lot about the history of Sviyazhsk, and visited its main attractions, including the Assumption Monastery, the St. John the Baptist Monastery, the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, and the Makarievsky Convent of the Sviyazhsk Reserve.
While visiting the town-island, the participants had a chance to practice archery and take pictures in medieval dress. Great weather, the picturesque nature and the views from the High Mountain hill where the town is located have left a lot of unforgettable impressions from the tour.
