Sustainability of the banking sector discussed at Gaidar Forum
The participants of Gaidar Forum 2017 discussed the results of the banking sector development in 2016, systemic risks in the banking sector and possible approaches to reforming its regulation and supervision during the expert discussion, Banking Sector Sustainability.
The moderator, Senior Research Fellow at RANEPA Laboratory of Structural Studies Mikhail Khromov, began by saying that the banking sector is “the core of the financial system, therefore its problems reflect on the economy as a whole, which means the sector’s stability is crucially important from all perspectives, including the development of business, the economy, and the state.”
The discussion was attended by Elena Rovenskaya, Director of the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria). She said research is always theoretical in nature, but we should nevertheless try to bring it closer to new requirements and actual practice. In her presentation, she spoke about IIASA, which works to identify and raise global and universal problems and provide valuable solutions for policymakers. When asked how to manage risk, the expert said: “A system with systemwide-risk banks needs to be restructured.”
