World Bank chief executive, leading world politicians will take part in Gaidar Forum at RANEPA
From January 16 to 18, 2018, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) will host the Gaidar Forum. Politicians Herman van Rompuy and Giuliano Amato, and economic expert Kristalina Georgieva will take part in the event.
The Gaidar Forum is a standing discussion platform and a meeting point for key players on the global economic and political arena. This year’s forum is entitled Russia and the World: Values and Virtues. The organizers include the Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), the Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy (Gaidar Institute) and the Association of Innovative Regions of Russia (AIRR).
Giuliano Amato is a well-known Italian statesman, member of the Constitutional Court of Italy and member of the Board of Directors of the European Public Law Organization; he was Prime Minister of Italy in 1992-1993 and 2000-2001. In 1987-1988, he was Deputy Prime Minister; in 1987-1989, Minister of Finance; in 1994-1997, he led the antimonopoly committee; in 1998, he joined the Massimo D'Alema government as the Minister of Institutional Reform, and then from 1999 to 2000, as Finance Minister. In 2000-2001, he again chaired the Council of Ministers, pursuing reforms aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the economy and enhancing social security. Also in 2001-2006, Mr. Amato was a member of the Senate from Tuscany. In 2006, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies and became Minister of the Interior in the Romano Prodi government.
The current Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank, Kristalina Georgieva, has held various positions in the World Bank system. She joined the World Bank in 1993 as an environmental economist. Later, in 2004, she was promoted to World Bank Director for the Russian Federation, based in Moscow. Then she became Director in charge of the World Bank environmental strategy, policies and lending.
From 2007 to 2008, Georgieva was Director for Sustainable Development in charge of policy and lending operations in infrastructure, urban development, agriculture, environment and social development, including support to fragile and conflict-affected countries.
Then from 2008 to 2010, she served as Vice President and Corporate Secretary and was the interlocutor between the World Bank Group’s senior management, its Board of Directors and its shareholder countries. Since 2010, she helped shape the agenda of the European Union, first as Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. As the European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources, Georgieva was in charge of the European Union's budget and staff across its institutions around the world. Kristalina Georgieva officially assumed her current position as Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank on January 2, 2017.
Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Policy Center, former President of the European Council (2009-2014), former Prime Minister of Belgium (2008-2009) will take part in the 2018 Gaidar Forum. During his career, the expert has held various political posts. From 1975 to 1978, he was an Advisor to the Prime Minister of Belgium; after that, he worked as Adviser to the Minister of Finance until 1980. From 1988, he was Secretary of State of Finance and Small Businesses; in the same year, Mr. Van Rompuy became a senator at the Parliament of Belgium (until 1995). From 1993 to 1999, he was Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Budget. In 2007, Herman Van Rompuy was appointed Royal Explorer and Royal Conciliator. In 2008-2009, he served as Prime Minister of Belgium, and from 2009 to 2014, he was elected the first full-time President of the European Council.
Herman Van Rompuy teaches at the Universities of Leuven and Louvain, the College of Europe in Brussels and the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, president of the European Policy Center. He is the author of the books, “Europe in the Storm,” “De kentering der tijden” [The turn of the times], “Hopen na 1984” [Hopes after 1984], “Het christendom. Een moderne gedachte” [Christianity. A Modern Idea], and “Vernieuwing in hoofd en hart. Een tegendraadse visie” [Renewal of Thoughts and Heart. A Polemic View]. He has been awarded the Nobel Prize of Peace in 2012 (the prize was awarded to the European Union, but Van Rompuy received it together with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz); the International Charlemagne Prize, the Benelux-Europa Prize, the Gold Medal of the Jean Monnet Foundation, the Michele de Gianni Award, and others.
